Jayne on a Playne
One of the best things about living in a connected world is the ability to network with other people. This is no more true than in the world of digital wedding photography. I am proud to be a member and moderator of a professional website called PWP dedicated to professional wedding photography. It is there that I learn about new trends in the industry while sharing with some of the very best in the industry, worldwide. It has become over the years, a second home and sounding board for me and I have met some life-long friends there. The problem with online communities is that while occasionally local members will get together for drinks or a seminar there are those who live in distant countries that can only muse about traveling to meet their counterparts. This past weekend, with the help of a few friends and a PayPal donation button, I was able to help realize that dream for my friend and Australian photographer Jane Gibbons-Eyre.
Jane has been traveling across the country to meet her “e-friends” and being from southern OZ-land, Jane has never seen snow in person. After traveling from the warm regions of Georgia and Florida to hang out with cool peeps and attend Zack Arias‘ uber-cool One-Light workshop, which he put together just for her, the next stop was Boston. I was very worried that the forecast of freezing rain would put a kaibash on our plans of doing “New England” stuff and fall short of her expectations. In a very un-New England like fashion, the weather could not have cooperated more.
Like Mark Twain once said, “If you don’t like New England weather, wait a minute.”

Waking up early to a flake-free landscape and heading into town, Jane was really excited when the first flakes started to fall from the sky. She looked at her gloves and exclaimed with the giddiness of a little kid, “They have shapes!” and asked that we’d keep her from wandering into traffic.

It is funny to think of an adult who has never thrown a snowball before.

After exchanging her coat for a ski jacket, we braved the now whiteout conditions and headed into the city. Our first stop, the Boston Public Gardens.

Jane’s first time eating snow. Her sons back home made sure to caution her on eating the yellow variety.

Jane also had never seen a snowblower before. The guy did not know what to think when she jumped into his path. We had to explain to him she wanted a photo and to simply ignore her while she snapped away with her camera.

It went from nice, pretty, light, and fluffy snow to the stinging, heavy, wet and misreable variety in a matter of hours. Jane stayed happy and even volunteered to help shovel the driveway with me.
I have more photos that I will post up from her trip when i have a moment. Thanks for coming to Boston Jane. I hope it was a visit you will not soon forget.
